Blacklisting (Resolved)

  • Please note that the chs25, chs31 and chs32 shared servers IP addresses are blacklisted. This is due to some of the users on the server sending out spam/bulk mail giving the IP a bad reputation, this causes mail to be rejected.

    The spam has been removed that caused the blacklisting and the delisting request have been sent to the blacklisting authorities. We are unable to change the sending IP of those servers as the other sending IP's were blacklisting as well during the listing.

    Different blacklisting authorities take longer to delist a blacklisted IP address.

    For now you can use your ISP's SMTP mail server to send emails on an email program.

    We recommend applying for a dedicated IP @ R29 per month or R87 quarterly.     Hi,

    We recently had to change the IP of our ns1 name server due a previous colo provider closing their doors, it was an unexpectedly short time frame we had to work with,

    Due to this, the new IP seems to not of had anough time to propagate through out - causing intermittant issues with domain name resolution etc.

    It's been close to 48 hours since the IP change and we believe this will be resolved shortly.

    We're going to be bringing the server down for a short period of time to install an additional drive which will be used to improve on the backups of the server,

    Phew, disk quota calc is under way still. this is due the length of time the machine has been online since the last reboot or failure (250day+)

    We're expecting it to take longer than wanted, seen as it's taken so long already.

    ll services on chs1.ampledns.com are up and running. However we had several events today that are in regards some issues on this server. The loads on the server are elevated since 8am and that influence overall performances. The loads are basically caused by heavy disk usage triggered by normal customer usage and some backup/restore operations on the server. As the processes have to wait on disk this overloads the CPU cores and some processes from time to time are unresponsive.

    We will be keeping an eye on the server for a couple of hours for further maintenance and investigation.

  • There is currently a load on srv011.ampledns.com that is causing loading delays for the domains on this server.
    The data centre is looking into the cause of the load and will resolve this issue as soon as possible.

    a. The datacentre is still isolating the cause of this, websites will still experiences slow loading times , more updates to come.
    b. The technicians are still isolating the cause of the high load and apologise for any delays, a resolution will be made as soon as possible.
    c. The datacentre is rebuilding the apache configurations to reduce the server load.

    Update 1:

    The load issue on the server appears to be a general traffic issue, meaning there is no 'one' account that is causing it but increased traffic generally to number of accounts without any particular pattern, and which also does not indicate an attack of any kind.

    Additionally, we have added some optimizations in apache and mysql configuration on the server which helped a bit as well, but the traffic is still quite high on the server and thus load as well.

    Update 2:

    The load is currently at 17.57% which is still high but relatively lower than earlier on. This has been caused by the amount of traffic being experienced on this server which is having a dificult time handling it. We are suggesting migrations to be done to newer and a less busier server.

    GHOST glibc library security vulnerability:

    We were made aware of a critical vulnerability in the glibc library. This vulnerability is commonly known as GHOST and has been assigned CVE-2015-0235.
    What this means:

    GHOST is a 'buffer overflow' bug affecting the gethostbyname() and gethostbyname2() function calls in the glibc library. This vulnerability allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code with the permissions of the user running the application.
    The gethostbyname() function calls are used for DNS resolving, which is a very common event. To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must trigger a buffer overflow by supplying an invalid hostname argument to an application that then calls gethostbyname().

    What our awesome sysadmins did: (other than getting very little sleep!)

    1) Updated the glibc and ncsd packages
    2) Restart vulnerable services that use glibc (since so many services use glibc, the safest option is to restart the system).

    Monitored any server outages after reboot due to server disk checks that the system forces if it feels the server's been running for longer than x days.
    Seen as a number of our server have had uptime of over 100days some went into FSCK which caused extended delays. We're sorry this happened - though it was unavoidable.

    Due to the large number of servers we admin, we also could not schedule these reboots to be done after hours for all machines. Some servers ran into working hours causing down time - and a few death threats from upset clients ;)

    The jw-vz1.ampledns.com server is being rebooted to an updated OS and will be interrupted for approximately 30-60 minutes.

    UPDATE: The OS update was to prevent a recently annouced valnerability called the GHOST vulnerability in Glibc.
    The reboot was meant to tak 5 min - however the server went into fsck (disk check) and is now taking longer than we hoped.

    Unfortunately this os update could not wait for after hours due to the nature of the security patch.

    UPDATE 2: Server is still down. the disk check it taking much longer than anticipated! We appologies for this inconvenience caused, it shouldn't be too much longer now.
    UPDATE 3: Server is still doing disk checks - no verbose progress output - though if it's taken this long - we can only hope it will be close.
